European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
