Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
